Welcome to coverage like never before

As the first and only satellite-powered mobile network in the country, One NZ Satellite offers you coverage where traditional cell towers don't reach - that's around 40% of our land mass! As Farmside are 100% owned by One NZ this means that this ground-breaking technology is also now available to eligible Farmside Mobile customers!

Farmside backed by One NZ is bringing you the first and only satellite-powered mobile network in the country. One NZ Satellite offers you coverage where traditional cell towers don’t reach – that’s around 40% of our land mass!

Farmside customers can send and receive TXTs via the One NZ Satellite network anywhere with a line of sight to the sky, at no extra cost on an eligible phone and plan*. That means on the farm, on the road, on the water, or even up in the mountains, you can literally TXT in the middle of nowhere.

With this kind of coverage, it’s no surprise more than 2 million TXTs have already been sent through space since the service launched!

Think of One NZ Satellite as peace of mind in your pocket. If you’re out in the sticks and without traditional coverage, it gives you an additional layer of communication alongside the normal safety devices you usually use.

Even if you’re in a more built-up area, you have the reassurance that if nature strikes and traditional networks go down (even temporarily), you can access satellite-powered coverage to keep in touch until cell towers are restored.

How to TXT via space

Once you’ve got an eligible phone and plan, there’s nothing you need to do to enable the service.
Here are a few tips to help you use the service:

  • To TXT via satellite, you need a line of sight to the sky. Unlike other satellite services, you don’t need to hold your phone up towards the sky.
  • You can prepare your TXT and press send as soon as you see the One NZ SpaceX banner appear on-screen.
  • To check if your TXT has been delivered, check the time stamp next to your TXT. On a Samsung phone or OPPO phone, tap on the message.
  • Satellites are amazing, but they can’t keep your phone charged! Remember to charge your phone or take a battery pack if you are out adventuring.
  • Ensure you are on the latest phone software to get the best experience.

Check that you are satellite-ready

You need an eligible phone and plan to TXT through space.Check this before you head out of traditional cell-tower coverage.

Ensure you have clear line of sight to the sky

Finding open spaces or an area that’s unobstructed by things such as buildings, trees, structures etc. will help your phone ‘find’ the satellites.

Look for ‘One NZ SpaceX’ on your phones network banner

The One NZ SpaceX network banner shows when your phone is connected to a satellite. There will be short gaps but don’t worry the next satellite should come within minutes and the banner will reappear.

Send your TXT via the TXT app on your phone

You can check your TXT has been sent by looking for the time stamp. If your TXT fails to send, check your network banner and ensure clear line of sight to the sky, then try again.

Important Info

*One NZ Satellite: TXT in minutes on eligible phones and plans. TXT only and needs line of sight to sky. Terms, fair use and capacity control applies.

What is One NZ Satellite TXT?

Satellite TXT is a new service that uses coverage outside of traditional cell-tower coverage. The service is for TXT only and has launched on a limited number of eligible phones with an eligible plan . It requires clear line of sight to the sky. Service limitations, network performance, phone and plan eligibility will improve over time.

How long will One NZ Satellite TXT messages take to send and be delivered?

In many cases, TXT messages will be sent instantly but some may also take minutes to send and receive. If your TXT fails to send, then try again. As the service matures and more satellites are launched, we expect the delivery times of TXT messages to improve.

The type of eligible phone you are using, where you are in New Zealand and whether a satellite is currently overhead will all have an impact on whether your TXT is sent or received and how long it takes.

Is the One NZ Satellite TXT service a replacement for a Personal Locator or Distress Beacon (PLBs and EPIRBS)?

No. The Satellite TXT service is an extra layer of protection and will enable two-way communication so you can contact friends or family members when outside traditional cell-tower coverage. If you are planning a trip to a back country or rural area, it is always recommended to take a personal locator beacon in case of emergency.
